Earth Day Literacy Stations

Happy Sunday everyone! I just came home the sweetest surprise which every teacher will understand.  I had taken my daughter to the mall and left a pile (I mean huge pile) of papers on the counter in a 'to be laminated' pile.  When I came home, not only did my hubby laminate it all, but he cut it all out too.  Wahoo!  I owe him one ;)

Earlier today I posted my newest set of literacy work centers.  They have an Earth Day theme with the cutest graphics!

I LOVE printing my stations out in color

but sometimes I run a little low on ink so included them in black & white.

There's a flap writing book for students to write about the 3R's (reusing,, reducing and recycling),

a color by word family activity,

 sentences to unscramble,

 words to put in ABC order,

 pictures to sort according to their beginning digraph (ch, sh, th and wh)

and compound words to build.

At this time of year my students are so independent during literacy stations.  I LOVE when they are engaged in purposeful activities while I am doing guided reading!

I Recycled ... Who Recycled... ?

Earth Day is a perfect time to think about recycling.  This whole class activity will get students doing some reading, listening, turn-taking and thinking about recycling.

It is played in the traditional "I have... who has ..." method.   There are 28 cards included in the loop.  If you are lucky enough to have a smaller class then a few students could have 2 cards.

Earth Day Writing Freebie

I'm still in the midst of April planning and each year I have my kiddos create these writing mini-books as we get closer to Earth Day.

It could be used as a stand alone activity but I use it after I read "A Tree is Nice" by Janice Udry

If you have not seen this book (is that possible?) it is about the life of a tree throughout the seasons and how it can be 'useful' in each season. 

To complete the writing activity students complete the pattern
"A tree is nice in______. I can ____________."

Each year I get some amazing creative ideas.  Here are a few that former students have come up with. 
A tree is nice in fall.  I can hang Halloween decorations on it.
A tree is nice in winter.  I can hide from the cold wind.
A tree is nice in spring.  I can see bird nests in the branches.
A tree is nice in summer.  I can climb to the top.

Earth Day Mystery Picture

I am LOVING this long weekend!!! The sun is shining, snow is melting and I am getting so much done.  I even fought the crowds at Costco this morning and only ran into 4 students.  I love how their parents look into my cart to see what I am buying  :-)

I'm trying to get some of my April planning done and finished up my Earth Day Tens and Ones Mystery Picture.
